Abstract

As technology has surged, so has the need for aptly trained workers to fill future jobs. This shift has moved technology advocates to call for mandated coding to be taught at all grade levels in U.S. schools. The call to code has gone out, but it is not the right call. Rather than a mandate to teach coding, schools should inspire students to code, creating inviting opportunities to learn coding while emphasizing the more global skills of creativity and problem solving. That strategy will better prepare students for careers that will be in demand in the next twenty years.
