Oregon Career Information System: Collaboration and Coordination of Universal Logins

The Oregon Career Information System provides Oregonians with educational and occupational information. It has an amazing amount of information that is incredibly helpful to students and teachers. CIS is a non profit organization that provides the highest quality of unbiased information of any similar sites. The Central School District has subscribed to this service for more than 15 years. It is used at both the high school and the middle school.

I have been the CHS administrator of the site since I started at Central. While it has been a great resource, truth is that the login protocol required by the national site was so stringent and complicated that students constantly forgot their login info. I was forever resetting passwords. Two years ago I worked with one of the User Services Specialists to create a universal login for Central that included a pattern for usernames and passwords which students and teachers could remember. This involved working with our School Management System coordinator and Talmadge Middle School. The universal login was better but still not as good as wee need. I am presently working with CIS director Laura McCoid to implement a Single Sign On mechanism, which CIS is piloting. By the spring we should have clear and easy access for students to log in to their CIS accounts.
